The medical application of genetics is integral to the improvement of human health. Each year, about 6% of the world-wide total births are children born with birth defects that can be lethal or can cause a life-long disability. Since 70% of birth defects can be prevented or their toll reduced, the SMGC was established in Qatar, to provide medical genetics and educational services and to harbor an active research enterprise.

The Shafallah Medical Genetics Center is a state-of-the art center that provides high quality medical genetics services, as well as professional and community-based educational services and harbors an active genetic research enterprise. The Shafallah Medical Genetics Center is a national independent provider of genetic services and a model for comprehensive and integrated genetic health-care services in the Middle East and the world.
